Sexual exploration and how we relate to one another through sex has evolved in the past century, but not in the way people might think. Whilst open relationships may sound like a new concept to most people, the truth is they have been about since man first discovered out to put his penis into a vagina millennia ago. But like every relationship, an open sexual relationship has both pros and cons to it. So to help you understand whether or not an open sexual relationship is the right one for you, here are some tips.
PROS
1. Sex With More Than 1 Person
Yep. You get to have sex with a variety of different people and not just the same person. Variety can be the spice of life (so they say).
2. More Varied Sex
You can do things with one partner that you might not be able to do with another partner. Explore kinks with one person that another person isn’t willing to indulge you in.
3. You Don’t Miss Out
We’ve all walked down the street checking out other people and thinking “Damn he/she is hot! I wonder what it would be like to have sex with her/him.” In an open relationship you can actually explore these opportunities with no guilt.
4. It’s Casual
Any open relationship no matter what people say, is causal. You don’t get tied down to being with one person.
5. You Don’t Get Bored
As you’re sleeping with different people, and different people like different things, the chances are you rarely get bored with sex.
CONS
1. There is Guilt
Even though you may have established the rules in your open relationship, guilt will invariably surface. It’s hard not to feel guilty when telling your partners how much they mean to you, knowing full well you slept with someone else the previous night. It’s hard to be equally affectionate so there will always be guilt.
2. Jealousy Will Rise
Like it or not one or more of you will get jealous of the others. It’s a natural instinct. You worry that your partner might leave you, they worry you might leave them…the circle goes on.
3. Pregnancy, STDs and STIs
The more people you sleep with, the greater the chance of catching something or of someone getting pregnant accidentally.
4. Time Management
Becomes very hard to manage when you have more than one partner to cope with.
5. Uncertainty
You don’t know when someone is going to leave or stay in an open relationship. More options means more chances for people to meet other people.
Whatever you decide is the best way to explore your sexuality, we hope we’ve given you enough advice to be fully prepared before taking the plunge.
